During colonial America, lotteries were an important source of public funds for both private and public projects. Lotteries were used to finance the foundation of Princeton and Columbia Universities, roads, canals, and bridges, as well as colleges and churches. During the French and Indian War, Benjamin Franklin organized a lottery to raise money for cannons for Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
