The enslaved man Denmark Vesey won a lottery, and the winnings enabled him to escape his owners.<\/p>\n
Today, 44 states and the District of Columbia run lotteries. But you can\u2019t play in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, or Utah.
